5 Things You Should Know Before Booking Nano Brows

Nano Brows have quickly become one of my most requested permanent makeup treatments — and I completely understand why.
When they're done well, they can create incredibly natural-looking brows. Instead of looking like you've had your eyebrows “tattooed”, carefully placed hair strokes work alongside your existing brow hairs to create shape, fullness and definition.
But Nano Brows aren't necessarily the right treatment for everyone.
So, before you decide they're the brows for you, here are five things I think every client should know.
1. Nano Brows might not actually be the best option for you
This surprises some clients!
If you already have very thick, dense or coarse brow hair, adding lots of delicate Nano strokes may not necessarily give you the best result.
Sometimes another technique — or a combination of techniques — will blend more naturally with what you already have.
This is why I don't believe in giving every client the same brow. I look at your natural hair, skin and the result you're trying to achieve before recommending a treatment.
2. Your artist matters — A LOT
Nano Brows are an incredibly artistic form of permanent makeup.
Two artists can both offer “Nano Brows” and produce completely different results.
Stroke direction, spacing, pattern, density, shape and how the strokes flow with your natural hair all contribute to the finished brow.
So don't choose your artist simply because they offer Nano Brows.
Choose them because you love their Nano Brows.
Look through their portfolio. Do you like their style? Are their results soft and airy? Fluffy? Structured? Very full?
There isn't one correct Nano brow style — but you need to find the artist whose work looks like what you want on your own face.
3. Your skin will influence your result
This is a BIG one.
When you're looking through beautiful Nano Brow pictures online, remember that you're not only looking at the artist's work — you're also looking at the client's skin.
Fine hair strokes can appear incredibly crisp on smooth, balanced skin.
If your skin is oily, textured or has enlarged pores, your healed result may look different from a photograph you've saved of somebody with very smooth skin.
That doesn't automatically mean you can't have Nano Brows. It means we need to work with your skin rather than promise you somebody else's result.
Your brows should be designed for your face and your skin.
4. Nano Brows may require more maintenance than Ombré Brows
Nano Brows are designed around individual hairstrokes and negative space, whereas an Ombré/powder brow creates a more continuous deposit of colour throughout the brow.
As pigment heals and changes over time, those ultra-fine Nano strokes can gradually lose some of their original definition.
Permanent-makeup pigment remains because pigment particles are retained within the skin; research on tattoo pigment has found an important role for dermal macrophages and a cycle in which pigment is released and recaptured by cells over time. (PubMed)
So rather than saying Nano is “less permanent”, I prefer to explain it like this:
The thing that makes Nano Brows so beautiful — those delicate individual strokes — is also the thing we need to preserve.
Your skin type, lifestyle, pigment choice, technique, aftercare and individual healing will all affect how your brows age.
5. The best Nano Brows shouldn't scream “Permanent Makeup”
This is probably the most important one for me.
I don't want to completely replace your natural brows.
I want to look at what's already there and think:
How can I make this better?
Maybe that's filling a sparse area.
Maybe it's creating a little more structure.
Maybe it's balancing asymmetry or adding the appearance of hairs where they naturally don't grow.
The end goal isn't for somebody to look at you and immediately know you've had permanent makeup.
It's for them to think:
Her brows look really good.
That's the difference.
